Strobe Light: June (Part 2)
The Music
This month’s selections are traveling through the world of House and Tech House from some lesser-known artists and a few you may have heard from before. Last year’s summer mix had me dipping deep into the world of Jackin’ House (you can peep that here) while this year’s mix has taken a bit of a deeper and sometimes slightly darker turn.
Starting things off is a tight little number whose name suggests a piece of life advice we could all probably benefit from putting into action: Put Your Phone Down (Low) by Jack Back (Defected Records). The Melodyne-drenched vocoder vocals strut their stuff over a tech-centric vibe the shows off some legit work behind the boards.
When You’re In My Party / Put Your Phone Down.
Well, I wouldn’t want to be rude. Phone’s down. Party up.

Obscure hip hop vocal chop I can’t quite place: check.
Funky ass percussion for the party people: check.
Hypnotic bass line check.
Talano – Wild Boy (Original Mix)
This track makes me want to dress up like a badger and take part in an elaborate heist on high-grade LSD…. OR. Maybe just put on the phones and climb the nearest semi-attainable mountain peak. Probably should stick to the hike. I hate dressing up.
Vanilla Ace – Perfect 10
A hypnotic bass line and solid chop of one of the most recognized voices in hip hop is a sure-fire recipe for success. This joint delivers flipping Life’s a Bitch by Nas, slowing it down to a boom bap tempo for a second before getting back into the groove.
We were beginners in the hood as Five Percenters
You can hear this one near the end of my summer mix I will be dropping when I round out this series with Part 3, next week.
Angelo Ferreri – Beginners (Original Mix)
This one’s for my Ma J<3
David Penn, Kevin McKay – Hallelujah (Extended Mix)
