This week is the first installment of my ongoing music series I will be trickling out in the coming months.  I’ve produced several projects through the years in the world of hip hop and electronic music but have slowed down the pace significantly over the past 5 to focus my energies on a lot of DJ shows and building up my resources to move things to the next level.

That doesn’t mean I ever stopped creating, though.

What it means is that I have a tonne of material that I just haven’t had the time or budget to finish properly.  It can be a challenge when your full-time job is music related.  There is only so much bandwidth in my brain and putting a 100% effort into a DJ career takes up a lot of it.    Today, I’m making a conscious effort to remove the obstacles that have gotten in the way of me getting things done.  It’s something that I used to let slide, but now it really sticks in my craw.

Not gonna happen.

Admittingly, in the past I’ve put the cart before the horse chasing some elusive and unlikely goals for what I wanted my career in music to be or the fringe benefits that went along with it.  Now, it’s not something I’m necessarily seeking.  What I’m seeking is happiness.  Just like the rest of us.   And chart-topping hits, big tours and adulation from strangers is not going to give it to me.  Just ask any artist whose been there. I imagine there is a whole new level of despair one could feel when they’ve spent their whole life pursuing a goal, they were sure would fill the void inside them, only to realize that wasn’t it.  That one cuts deep.

So, I’m still going to make music for the same reasons I always have just with a greater understanding of why I’m doing it and with a much different perspective.  I love the process and I love collaborating with other artists and putting projects like this one here together and seeing it until the end.

This beat was inspired by some quality Zen time at the beach, sometimes with a special friend, most times with my best bud, Charlee and the Chuckit!.  It’s where I go to recharge the batteries from a relentless gig schedule.  A different sound than my hip hop roots would indicate, but as it came together, I made the conscious effort to just get out of the way and let it be what it wanted to be.  It’s a vibe.  It’s a beat. It’s the beginning of some more good things to come, and besides….

It’s cheaper than therapy.
