Beats & Pieces: September 2019
Time for another installment of Beats & Pieces, featuring some random tracks that have blipped onto my radar over the past month. I like to use this monthly piece to feature some songs that don’t necessarily fit into some of my other posts that feature choice cuts from the world of house and hip hop. They can run the gamut from rock to reggae and from electronica to pop. My ears are always open to discovering new sounds and I’ve always got a real sense of joy putting on other people on to some music they may not have heard about yet.
Our tastes in music can vary drastically, usually dependent on our moods and/or environment. For example, I once went through a gym phase where I only listened to full Metallica albums when I worked out. I’m not even a huge Metallica fan, but I can appreciate their music and its ability to help me squeeze out a couple more reps. I started with Kill ‘Em All and tapped out when I got through ….And Justice for All. It’s a drastic musical departure from the content I play at the club or in the car, but you get my drift.
This month’s selection should fit nicely into certain moods and environments you might soon find yourself in. So, without any further ado, let’s start things off with the funky vibes provided by Toro y Moi. For me, this is some getting ready to hit the town on a Saturday night shit. At the same time, I could hear these Chromeo-Breakbot-esque neo-disco vibes at the right dark and sexy lounge.

I have somewhat of a bias for any artist that has “Lil” in their stage name. I know, I know, I shouldn’t be so un-woke. That why when I first heard this, I was surprised to hear it was by the late Lil Peep with clearly some help from some pretty big names. Lil Peep’s story is a tragic one, but he may have etched something significant to his legacy with this one. It’s not exactly a hidden gem with over 21 million plays and some radio support, but it is a pretty catchy pop song.

I think it would be important for me to feature a bit of Drum & Bass this month. Hearing it bubble into some choice sets by emerging Threestyle DJs such as Trapment and my local favorites Joe Pound and Fidel Cashflow, I feel like it might be on the verge of a little more shine. I find good Drum & Bass can give me the energetic and uneasy feeling of being in the middle of a well-planned out heist. The money is in the bags and we’re making the crucial dash to the getaway car. This one does it right here. It’s called Siren so it was pretty much inevitable, and Sub Focus has been lighting fires in this genre for a minute.
