If you work in the entertainment or hospitality industries, you are well aware of how much promoters and venues squeeze every last drop out of Halloween. Festivals, club nights, concerts, goth weddings, you name it! You can’t really blame them. You gotta get in while the getting’s good, and the increase in numbers that the end of October produces makes up for the predictable dip in early November.

That being said, it can often feel like the Halloween that never ends unless the annual spook fest actually lands on the weekend. This year’s official festivities land on a Thursday, providing ample opportunities for events. Saturday was pretty big and this Thursday should be almost as good being so close to the weekend. Don’t get me started on these Nov. 1st Day of the Dead parties, though. You need to go away, so if I see you dressed up this Saturday, don’t even get me started you bloody savage. Meet me at Santa’s workshop in the mall on December 27th for your reckoning.
Halloween is still a couple days away, but I’ve already rocked two Halloween shows in with a couple Tarantino themes at the Roxy in Vancouver this past weekend. As far as costume parties go, the Tarantino theme is something relatively new, but a solid choice if you’re looking for a fresh idea. The ninja vibe of the Kill Bill series and army themes of Inglorious Bastards or the Western styles of The Hateful 8 and Django provide some ample characters to emulate if you’re looking to get creative, and if you’re feeling a bit lazy you can always just wear a black suit (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction)
So, with one more to go, I’m looking forward to a mellow November before December kicks me in the ass. I guess I should leave you with some Halloween themed music picks, but I feel like I’m a little jaded because all the classics seem pretty obvious and at this point are starting to lose a bit of steam. Thriller and Ghostbusters just ain’t what they used to be, so here are a couple tracks that represent the more current sounds of today.
Ghosts ‘n Stuff by Deadmau5 feat. Rob Swire
Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites by Skrillex
Monster by Kanye West feat. Nicki Minsk, Rick Ross, Jay-Z & Bon Iver
