I don’t know about you, but life has been a little weird in these parts lately. My fondness for FaceTime and hikes through the trails in my neighbourhood has increased exponentially. That’s not saying much considering since the invention of Apple’s video messaging service I have only used it a handful of times. Lately it just seems like a much more relevant piece of technology.
At this point in time most people are all too aware of how much we as humans are social creatures. In fact, it was our ability to cooperate and coexist in our early tribes that enabled us to innovate and survive. And thank God for that human innovation because without it things could get a little squirrely. I worried about what I might do if the wi-fi went out. Heaven forbid, these shaved apes might start reading books again!
I’ve spent more than a fair share of the last month utilizing a media distraction approach. It works for awhile and then I find that even that can leave me feeling less than optimal. Back to the books for a bit to recharge whatever those levels in my brain get zapped from my eyes rotating through my cellphone, laptop and TV all hours of the day. Sure, I’ve being doing other things, hell even productive things like writing and composing, but there’s always that screen staring back at me. Taunting me. Mocking me.
I was thinking about taking up ceramics.
Not today though. In the immortal words of O’Shea Jackson, “Today was a good day.” Not for any reason in particular, but I’ve just felt better today. Maybe it was the hike or staying busy with some work, but I’ve managed to get some things done and been creative in the process. Creativity is always a great barometer for when things start to go south. When it’s there – yay! When it’s not – boo! Today was a good one, but don’t worry…. There’s always tomorrow to lay in the fetal position.
I went for a walk down by the creek today. The water was rushing the way it usually does in spring and there was a robin nearby wetting it’s beak. Little guy busted off a couple sweet melodies before taking flight into the trees.
Pretty sure that was for me.
Also…. I might be losing it.
Perhaps this is just the calm before the storm and this lockdown is starting to bear its fruit for little old Jack Torrance James.
