Finding the time to write something as simple as an update has proven to be more difficult than I had imagined. Having your career pulled out from under your feet takes a bit to get used to and it turns out for me, it was around 6 months of fear and uncertainty before I decided to move on with my life.
DJing and events have been my bread and butter for almost 20 years, and after coming off one of the best years of my professional career in 2019, early 2020 was shaping up to continue in that direction. Safe to say everyone knows that didn’t happen and I haven’ t made a dime from the craft in almost a year.
I haven’t even touched the tables in 2021.
While I did put in some work on a couple mixes in the summer, they just didn’t sound right to me, so I shelved them. There is a certain amount of effort involved with putting together a mix. Usually some of the leg work can be done in the mix at the club or the spot. Not so much of that going on these days. At this point I find the whole situation extremely uninspired.
I miss the people. I miss the music. I miss the vibe.
No stream is ever going to come close to the energy and feeling of playing to a packed room, finding the pocket and getting lost in the music. Until that time comes, I’ve decided to put my head down and pay some dues in the world of film.
The effort involved going down this path is nothing to sniff at. There isn’t a department that doesn’t feel the burn from exhausting days on set with hardly a moment to grab a bit of chow and relax. It’s a far cry from 3 hour DJ sets and lazy afternoons spent going through music. Lucky for me though, I managed to work my way into a decent role on one of the biggest productions Vancouver has ever seen, reimagining a classic story for the world’s biggest motion picture studio.
And that’s all that I’m going to say about that, for now…
Honestly, it’s all I have the time for.
